| Bowling week 21 | Brookside Varsity Bowling Week 21
Coach: Mark Cizl
The Brookside Cardinals took on John Marshall this past Saturday at Buckeye Lanes in North Olmsted. For two consecutive weeks, the Cardinals again took 7 out of 7 in the final week of team competition. Freshman, Brad Masters was highest over average this week rolling 27 pins over average with a opening 204 game. Senior Arin Bruening has steadily improved this season ending the day 26 pins over average. Freshman Jeff Sours had a final 202 game ending with 14 pins over average. Team leaders Corey Ness and John Bonar completed the season with 181 and 183 averages respectively. These two young men provided steady leadership and team support to your younger bowlers this year. They will be missed.
Next week is the final week of our season that began last August. It will be a Singles Tournament held at Parma Freeway Lanes following the Greater Cleveland Interscholastic Bowling League’s Trophy presentations. While Brookside finished in the middle of the 20 team league standings, they did a very respectable job this year after a one year absence due to school district budget cuts. Losing 4 Seniors this year, we will be looking for additional bowlers, both girls and boys to be part of our Varsity Bowling tradition next school year. Any high school bowler can participate regardless of other activity involvements during the Fall & Winter seasons. If interested see Coach Mark Cizl.
BHS “Skins” Leaders:
The BHS inter-team competition of “Skins” has concluded. A “skin” is equivalent to winning a frame….the highest pin fall per frame gets a “skin”. It’s been a fun team competition to encourage bowlers to make a good first shot, or convert their spares when unable to get a strike. Final Skins totals are:
John Bonar: 125 * (2006/07 Skins Winner)
Corey Ness: 77
Chris Pranckunas: 63
Jeff Sours: 56
Brad Masters: 53
Arin Bruening: 22
Aaron Lunn: 21
Lindy Scarpelli: 11
Joey Angylosi: 0
SMS SuperBowl III
In mid-March, Coach Cizl will be organizing SMS SuperBowl III. This will be a 5-6 week team competition intramural bowling league for all Sheffield Middle School students interested. Winning team will be awarded the SMS SuperBowl III Championship. The Brookside Varsity Bowlers will assist Coach Cizl with bowling instruction to the beginner/younger bowlers. Costs and details to follow. See Coach Cizl for questions at: mcizl@sheffield.k12.oh.us or SMS Band Office.
| | Skins week 20 | A "skin" is comparable to winning a "frame". The highest pinfall per frame is one skin. If 2 or more bowlers tie with the same pinfall, the skin carries over so the next frame is worth two skins. It's a inter-team competition game that continues all season. John Bonar: 123 Corey Ness: 77 Chris Prankunas: 63 Brad Masters: 41
Jeff Sours: 41 Arin Bruening: 21 Aaron Lunn: 21
Lindy Scarpelli: 11

The Cardinals again took 7 out of 7 from Midpark this past Saturday in GCIBL action. Freshmen Jeff Sours rolled a 209 game to end the morning 22 pins over average; and Brad Masters ended the day 59 pins over. Senior anchorman, John Bonar needed to strike out in the 10th frame of the 2nd game to take beat Midpark's top bowler and did just that! John rolled 214 and 201 games to total a 606 series and ended up being 54 over average. Coach Cizl remarked that Senior Corey Ness has really been bowling well the past few weeks and rolled another 600 series with 216 and 209 games to make a 609 series ending the day with 72 pins over average. Any bowler still interested in joining the successful Brookside bowling program can still do so. Practice is every Friday at 3:15 at NCSL. | | Bowling week 16 | Brookside Dominates Garfield Heights in GCIBL Bowling Action……..
This past Saturday, the Brookside Cardinal Bowling team took 7 out of 7 from Garfield Heights in GCIBL (Greater Cleveland Interscholastic Bowling League) Action. This was the 2nd window qualifier for the Pepsi Scholarship Tournament also. Bowling over average for the Cardinals were: Junior Lindy Scarpelli = 69 pins over; freshman Aaron Lunn with 208 and 213 games = 63 pins over; Freshman Jeff Sours with 202 & 225 games = 82 pins over; and Senior anchorman Corey Ness with 217 & 249 games ending with a beautiful 630 Series and 99 pins over. There’s a very good chance the Cardinal bowlers will now qualify for scholarship opportunities in the Pepsi Tournament this winter!
Coach Mark Cizl was very proud of his young bowlers especially since 3 of our regulars were unable to compete this week at Parma Freeway Lanes. Practice will again be next Friday at NCSL at 3:00. Any Brookside students are welcome to practice and receive bowling instruction from Coach Cizl.
A special thanks is due to the Cardinal Athletic Boosters and Amvets Post #55 for supporting our BHS Bowling team this year, making it possible for all of our bowlers to have matching bowling shirts! On behalf of our entire team………….Thank you!

Bowling over average this week were: Freshman Brad Masters: 5 over; Senior Corey Ness: 73 pins over with a final 222 game; and Freshman Jeff Sours rolled a middle 203 game to end up 118 over average for the day.
At Friday’s practice, the Cardinal Bowlers were treated to a walk thru tour by Mr. Brett Locher of the pinsetter machinery/technology at North Coast Shoreway Lanes. Most of the every day bowlers never realize the “works” behind the scenes that provide bowling as a life-time recreational sport. Coach Mark Cizl commented that his young bowlers “enjoyed the experience and had many questions. They didn’t realize it takes 21 bowling pins per lane to keep the machines running smoothly; or that there are 39 ½ boards across the lane that bowlers use for targets when aiming for strikes and spares. It’s all about learning the sport”.
Practice this week at NCSL at 3pm. Again, anyone is welcome to come out to our weekly practices. This week we travel to Buckeye Lanes to take on Bedford Chanel before we break for the holidays until January 6th.
