THINGS TO DO THIS SUMMER WITH YOUR CHILD
Summertime is just around the corner and here are a few ideas for you to do with your child. We found the ideas on the internet by googling “things to do” and these popped right away. Have fun!

Help Your Little Ones Make New Friends
At the playground or at daycare, sometimes they need a little help meeting new people.

Master the Jump Rope
Games, songs, twirling techniques -- proof, once again, that the simplest toys can provide hours of fun!

Try These Ball Games
When kicking, catching, and throwing grow old, don't just toss the ball in the closet. Decorate it with markers, try to catch it with towels, or make up new rules for kickball.

Chill Out with Yoga
They'll have fun trying to balance on one foot, and you'll both get to take a few deep breaths!

Rock Out with Some Musical Toys
Let tinkling melodies and crashing drums be your Summer soundtrack!

Sign Your Toddlers Up for Music Lessons
They're ready sooner than you think! If they're ga-ga for guitars, and can focus on a task for 10-15 minutes, it might be the right time.

Play Dress-Up!
Every home is happier when it's filled with unicorns, astronauts, dragons, and fairies!

Let them Surf the Web
More than 2 hours is probably too much, but this study shows that Web surfing can improve communication skills and mental sharpness.

Savor the Summer Nights
Q: Is there anything better than spending a starlit Summer night with your family, chasing fireflies and eating s'mores? A: No. There isn't.

Play Make Believe. A Lot.
Take note: our kids are professional magic-makers! Who else do you know that can turn a sandwich bag into a life preserver? See why imagination counts.

Explore a Museum
Major museums are starting Family Art programs. Find one in your area and tap into your inner Monets.

Note from the Principal

Believe it or not, it’s that time of year when we begin making plans for next year. It’s the time when we begin looking at the teaching staff for next year, scheduling, and of course, STUDENT PLACEMENT. As you all know, the practice at Tennyson is to create the best educational environment for all children. We’re fortunate to have a staff with much expertise and diversity in teaching style. I welcome any specific information from you, the parent, about your son’s or daughter’s learning style, his/her tendencies or his/her academic needs. Please feel free to put your thoughts into writing and send to me. The information you provide will be confidential and will be considered as students are placed into classrooms for next year.                 We do ask you to follow the two rules we have in place for the process. First, please do not ask your child’s current teacher for placement recommendations. This places a teacher in a very awkward position with his/her peers. Secondly, do not request a specific teacher in your letter to me. We cannot and will not guarantee placement of a student with a specific teacher. When we do make classroom placements, we spend many hours trying to find the perfect blend and balance of academic abilities, personalities, and gender to make a well –rounded classroom as well as accounting for different learning styles. I again emphasize that all information must be in writing and please submit it to Tennyson by May 18th. Thank you and I am looking forward to hearing from you.                                                                Sincerely,                                                                Gretchen Loper, Principal                                                                gloper@sheffield.k12.oh.us  Read More >

Dental Sealant Program for Second Graders
Our second grade students are so lucky to be offered a FREE dental sealant program right here at Tennyson Elementary. Through the Elyria City Health Department, your child’s teeth can be protected with a plastic coating called sealant. With dental sealants your child may never have a cavity or filling, and you’ll probably have lower dental bills!  Sealant is a safe plastic coating which keeps germs out of the back teeth by covering their tiny hiding places. Sealants work and are easy to apply. Plus there are no drills involved!! A dentist will examine your child’s teeth and decide which teeth need to be sealed. A dental hygienist will then put the sealants on your child’s teeth to seal out the food and bacteria. Your child’s sealants will then be checked next year when he/she is in third grade. Just sign the permission slip sent home on Wednesday, March 28th, and check whether you do or do not want your child to receive sealants. There is no payment for this service.  If you would like more information, please view the following video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SN0shrSBJxo If you have any questions please call the Dental Sealant program at the Elyria City Health Department at 440-284-1562.  Read More >
